Jayasri Burman: The Divine Feminine & Mythological Grace

Renowned as one of the most vital modern women artist voices in contemporary Indian art today, Jayasri Burman (b. 1960, Kolkata) weaves a dreamy, lyrical universe where mythology, nature, and the divine feminine converge. Based in New Delhi, her art is celebrated for its intricate detail, vibrant color palette, and fluid expressiveness that bridges traditional Indian folk aesthetics with contemporary sophistication.

Burman’s masterworks are rooted in exceptional formal training. After studying at the legendary Kala Bhavan in Shantiniketan, she completed her Master of Arts in Painting at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata. Her technical prowess was further shaped abroad through printmaking under Monsieur Ceizerzi in Paris and print workshops with Paul Lingren—infusing her canvases and bronze sculptures with extraordinary graphic precision and textural depth.

From lush, fairytale-like landscapes to sacred female figures embodying grace and strength, owning a Jayasri Burman creation is an investment in Indian art heritage.
