Sekhar Roy (b. 1973) is a distinguished Kolkata-born visual artist whose career spans over two decades of profound evolution. Known primarily for his powerful Indian figurative art, Roy’s work is a rhythmic dance between the spontaneous pulse of the canvas and the structured narratives of Indian mythology. From his early days of charcoal drawings to his latest explorations in nature paintings and burnt-wood sculptures, Roy remains a pivotal figure in contemporary Indian art.
Sekhar Roy’s figurative paintings are celebrated for their "angular, never soft" human forms. His work captures a pervading sense of alienation, drawing parallels to the solitude found in the works of David Hockney and Edward Hopper, yet remaining deeply rooted in Indian imagery. While his earlier works focused on isolated male figures, women now float spontaneously into his compositions. His figures are defined by bold outlines, creating a sharp, dramatic presence.
In recent years, Roy has expanded his repertoire to include nature paintings, capturing the "silent and timeless beauty" of the world around him. His experimentation extends to his medium of choice: Wood.
